Dodgy’s playlist

It’s been 16 years since Britpop trio Dodgy got together for a studio date.

February marked the reunion of original members Nigel Clark, Mathew Priest and Andy Miller, as they brought you their fifth studio album Stand Upright In A Cool Place.

These are the blokes responsible for the 90s hits “Staying Out for the Summer,” “If You’re Thinking of Me” and “Good Enough.”

But that was then and Stand Upright In A Cool Place is now. Dodgy’s moved on.

Stand Upright isn’t stuck in the past. It’s fresh, even relevant with a Fleet Foxes feel. 

Best of all, this comeback isn’t pretentiously trying to be “Album of the Year” or something it’s not.

Dodgy’s already made their entrance. This simply is what it is, a solid return and the beginning of a new chapter.

Stupidfacedd – Wallpaper

“We’ve adopted this tune to get us vibed up before we go onstage. Amazing song, even better video. I met the guy who is Wallpaper (aka Ricky Reed) in San Francisco when I was on tour playing with Electric Soft Parade. He was playing in this crazy, brilliant prog rock band, Facing New York. This guy is in a different league and very much one to watch and listen out for.”

It’s Him – White Denim

“First track on the utterly bonkers album D. First heard about these psychedelic indie-prog-rockers on the brilliant website anydecentmusic.com and then with their single “Is And Is And Is” on BBC 6Music which to these ears sounds a bit like Coldplay mixed with Deep Purple. Should be wrong, but it’s right.”

Turning My Heartbeat Up – MVPs

“We adore Northern Soul, which is a very British movement that started in the clubs of Britain in the 1970s. Not sure how big it is in Canada. One of the great things about Northern Soul is that you keep discovering absolute belters and this rocked my sox this year not just because it opens with the line “listen to the sound of a drummer.” I’m pushing for Dodgy to do a cover of this. We already cover ‘The Snake’ by Al Wilson.”

Austin – Blake Shelton

“We were lucky enough to get to go over to Texas last July to mix the new Dodgy album, Stand Upright In A Cool Place, with Matt Pence (John Grant, Midlake) and admittedly I was a little tiddly on the plane when I became obsessed with this song. I played it over and over, much to the chagrin of Dodgy guitarist Andy Miller who had drawn the short straw and was seated next to me. It set us up for our adventure over there. OK it is cheesy beyond Gorganzola and most probably a bit crap as well, but it soundtracked an important part of 2011 for us. For that time me and Blake were like brothers.”

Tripped and Fell – Dodgy

“Are we allowed a Dodgy track? Well, it’s certainly been rocking our world as it’s brand new and we are very proud of it. It’s the opening track to our new album. It’s the first album together since the million selling Free Peace Sweet in 1996 and folk are already calling it the best stuff we’ve ever done. Can we come to Canada again please?”
