Kreesha Turner’s playlist

Kreesha Turner swears she’s just a simple, small town girl. That’s a little hard to believe as the chart topping singer fluffs her afro while we chat on the patio of Montreal’s Hotel 10 (formerly the Opus Hotel).

“Really, it’s true!” laughs the Edmonton native. “I’m just a girl who likes to hang out, watch Ellen and invite my close friends over for wine,” she says.

Sounds normal enough, but Kreesha isn’t your average prairie girl, not since her debut in 2008.

“Don’t Call Me Baby,” the third single off Passion, dominated the Top 10 of the Canadian Hot 100, landed the #1 spot on the U.S. dance charts and sold over 80, 000 copies.

Two years later Kreesha collaborated with Delerium and climbed to the top of the Billboard Dance/Club Charts with their #1 hit single “Dust in Gravity.”

“Aw, the Delerium boys, Bill and Rhys are great. I’m so flattered that they hunted me down and asked me to be a part of their project,” Kreesha thinks back.

Along the way, Kreesha picked up the 2009 Canadian Radio Music Award for Best New Artist, a MuchMusic Video Award nomination and two Juno nods.

Last winter Kreesha chased her debut’s success with her double-disc sophomore album Tropic Electric and she’s warming up for a tour this spring.

“I have big plans and I’ve definitely taken off my training wheels,” Kreesha says. “Touring the first album, I had a full band and backup singers. This time, I definitely feel like I want to use a DJ spinning the beat, I want backup singers and if we get the budget, lights!”

Well acquainted with the hot spots on the billboard, Kreesha presents five tunes that reign on her personal hit list.
