Marianas Trench’s playlist

Marianas Trench is on a mission to smash the pop mold.

Applauded for their efforts, the guys’ latest album, Ever After, was nominated for Pop Album of the Year at the 2012 Juno Awards earlier this year.

On Sunday, June 17, the boys return to the MuchMusic Video Awards for the third time, and are in the lead with 7 nominations, including the top recognition, Video of The Year, for their single “Fallout.”

A little emo punk band from Vancouver no more, Marianas Trench have really stepped things up and moved into a grander soundscape.

In case you haven’t indulged in the record yet, guitarist Matt Webb explains that Ever After is a concept album of sorts, taking its lead from their 2009 effort Masterpiece Theatre.

“The record tells a story,” Matt says. “It takes the listener on an emotional roller coaster with a very basic fairytale to go along with it in the liner notes.”

Rebels by nature, Marianas Trench refused to be slaves to the Age of the Single with Ever After, and they have no regrets.

“Artists these days are so focused on ‘the single.’ Ever After was designed to be listened to from front to back. We want to do something outside of the mold,” the guitarist says.

Just for you, Matt put together a playlist of tunes that he feels stand out from the rest.

1901 – Phoenix

“Something about this track just gets me pumped. As soon as that chorus slams in I want to floor the gas pedal. Plus its a great theme song in the Toyota commerical.”

Carlo – U.S. Royalty

“This track reminds me of old Fleetwood Mac and has got a great groove to it. Solid driving music as well.

Mr. Jones – Counting Crows

“One of my all time favourites tunes, puts a smile on my face no matter what my mood.”

Animal – Def Leppard

“Great song to get me revved up. I often hum this track to myself before going on stage.”

Beth/Rest – Bon Iver 

“I hear a lot of Bruce Hornsby in this track, which I really like. What a killer closing track for an album, I’ll spend my whole life trying to write a song like this.”
