Against Me!’s Tom Gabel reveals he’s transgender & plans to live as a woman

Tom Gabel, frontman of the punk-rock band Against Me! (pictured on the left), just announced his plans to begin living life as a woman.

Strong and unashamed, Tom tells Rolling Stone that he’s been privately struggling with gender dysphoria for as long as he can remember and is ready to publicly face it all.

Over the phone, Tom tells me that his past wasn’t an easy one.

“There was actually a time when I thought the whole world was ‘Against Me!’” Tom says. “But things have changed.”

Tom will soon begin the transition starting with electrolysis and hormone treatments, eventually blossoming into Laura Jane Grace, the new name and life Tom will lead.

Tom will also remain married to his wife Heather and told Rolling Stone just how supportive the mother of his two-year-old daughter has been.

“For me, the most terrifying thing about this was how she would accept the news,” Tom tells Rolling Stone’s Josh Eells. “But she’s been super amazing and understanding.”

Tom has also always been thankful to his fans for standing by and showing unconditional support since the group formed in 1997.

“Our fans have been great,” Tom tells me. “Their positive reactions help us put on a good show and be better musicians, better people.”
