Marie-Christine’s playlist

Where would Montrealer Marie-Christine rather be than at the Montreal International Jazz Fest? Nowhere. The girl is home.

Last year the nation heard this exotic songbird launch her debut Walk in Beauty. If you didn’t catch her then, now’s your chance.

Here’s a talent discovered and produced by Canadian big gun Corey Hart.

Even more impressive, Marie-Christine also has the legendary Stevie Wonder in her corner. For real.

While recording Walk in Beauty, Corey and his protege were browsing for the perfect cover song, and Marie-Christine came up with Stevie Wonder’s 1971 tune “Keep On Running.”

Then that’s what Corey did. He ran with the idea and reached out to Stevie’s management with his ambitious vision, a Marie-Christine/Stevie Wonder collaboration.

Eighteen months went by and what happened next is a dream come true. Stevie personally replied and accepted to appear on the cover track.

On that surreal note, here’s a playlist of dreamy tunes compiled by Marie-Christine.

.

Oublie Pas – Karkwa

“This is a song from an established rock group from Quebec. It talks about the distance that artists have to face when they go on the road, and they’re away from home and their spouse. I can relate to that. The musical mood is magic in this song.”

 .

Knocks Me Off My Feet – Stevie Wonder

“No one writes a love song like Stevie. He writes words that put so many images in my mind and melodies that put me in a dream state.”

 .

Workin’ Day & Night – Michael Jackson

“This is one fly song. It’s simply impossible to not move to it. It’s from my personal favorite album of Michael’s, his first solo album Off the Wall. Can’t live without it.”

.

Like a Bridge Over Troubled Water – Aretha Franklin

“First of all anything, Aretha sings I’m a fan of. We don’t call her the queen of soul for nothing. Her interpretation of this song gives me courage.”

.

On & On – Erykah Badu

“How refreshing it was when Erykah came out with this in the late 90s. I was automatically a fan! This song became a classic in the urban repertoire. She opened the door to a new style of soul.”
