Lady Gaga gives special thanks to Canada for 10 years of support

Lady Gaga is celebrating 10 years of fame this year.

April 8 marked the 10th anniversary of the superstar’s breakout hit single, “Just Dance,” and on August 19, Gaga’s debut studio album, The Fame, turned 10.

“Just Dance,” written by Gaga herself, R&B hip hop star Akon and renowned producer RedOne, and featuring the vocals of Colby O’Donis, is the song that started her on the trajectory to international mega-stardom.

After selling over 10 million copies, the scorching hot party anthem ranks among the best-selling singles of all-time.

“Just Dance” is a real success story and also the true definition of a sleeper hit. It took months for the track to climb the charts, but once it broke the top 10, it shot to No.1.

“I owe that all to my fans. I’m so grateful for my little monsters around the world and so thankful for all their support,” Lady Gaga tells me of her fanbase. “I’m especially thankful for my Canadian fans.”

There is a good reason why Canada gets a little extra gratitude from Mother Monster.

“Canada was my first No.1 record and that’s so special,” she says.

Thanks to Gaga’s Canadian fans, “Just Dance” reached the top of the Canadian Hot 100 on August 23, 2008, after debuting on the chart at No.97 in June. The song remained at No.1 for 5 consecutive weeks and eventually went 6x platinum.

Meanwhile in the US, “Just Dance” was still climbing the charts, and after 22 weeks, the track finally made it to the top of the Hot 100 in January of 2009.

Looking back, it’s hard to believe that just 10 years ago Lady Gaga was barely known outside her native New York City and now the whole world knows her name.

“And it started with Canada,” Gaga says. “It was really Canada that stood by me, held on and told the whole world about me. I love Canada so much.”

Canada will always have a special place in Gaga’s heart, kind of like the way a first love does.

“Canada was my first time for everything,” she says. “My first No.1, my first boyfriend and my first award.”

That’s right. After giving Gaga her first No.1 song, the nation presented the star with her first award, the 2008 MuchMusic Video Award for Best International Video for her second hit single “Poker Face.”

Since then, Gaga has won two more MuchMusic Video Awards among other numerous trophies, including 6 Grammys, 2 American Music Awards, 13 MTV Video Music Awards, the Songwriters Hall of Fame’s Contemporary Icon Award and Billboard’s 2015 Woman of the Year award.

In addition to those achievements, Lady Gaga became the first female artist to receive the Digital Diamond Award from the Recording Industry Association of America.

She also earned an Oscar nomination for her song “Til It Happens to You,” and won a Golden Globe for her standout role in the TV hit series American Horror Story: Hotel.

But wait, Gaga’s accomplishments don’t end there.

The superstar has sold over 25 million albums and more than 145 million singles. She produced 6 successful world tours, delivered an unforgettable and highly applauded performance at the Super Bowl halftime show and launched a non-profit charity organization the Born this Way Foundation back in 2011.

These are just a few triumphs. Lady Gaga has accomplished so much more and she did it all in just 10 years.

“This journey has been incredible and I’m very grateful. Thank you Canada for being there for me from the start,” Gaga says. “I’ll never forget that.”
