Pete Yorn’s playlist
Idle hands are the devil’s playground, but Pete Yorn doesn’t know anything about that.
“I never just sit around doing nothing. I’d freak out. I need to find creative things to do all the time,” the singer-songwriter says two minutes into our chat.
Pete has been slammed and on the go since he released his gold debut album, Musicforthemorningafter, over a decade ago.
As if the workload of an internationally praised solo artist isn’t enough, in 2009, Pete teamed up with Hollywood sex symbol, Scarlett Johansson, to record their joint album, Break Up, and recently launched another project, his new band, The Olms.
With fellow musician J.D. King, the duo dropped their self-titled debut back in June, and are already midway through writing their followup record.
Obviously Mr. Yorn can’t sit still.
Next, the Olms are heading to Paris, then London to play the iTunes Festival with superstars like Kings of Leon, Queens of the Stone Age and Vampire Weekend.
“Getting booked and playing shows has got to be my favorite thing,” Pete says. “Every night is an opportunity for me to get out there and put on the best show of my life.”
Essential to pulling off an epic concert, Pete adds, are cover songs added to his set list.
“Fans and I enjoy the covers. It’s fun to sing someone else’s words that really connect with me.”
Among the tunes that have Pete hooked is Leonard Cohen’s “Suzanne.”
“That one always sounds so good in the morning,” Pete says. “One of my favorites.”
Here are 5 other songs that made Pete’s short list and actually find their way into his live sets.
I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend – The Ramones
China Girl – David Bowie
Dancing in the Dark – Bruce Springsteen
Ever Fallen in Love – Buzzcocks
Atlantic City – Bruce Springsteen
I Feel Good Again – Junior Kimbrough
