Unkle Bob’s playlist
Sometimes an act comes along by way of the underground and pulls off a surprise attack.
In 2007, Unkle Bob, aka Rick Webster, exploded in North America without warning.
Based in Glasgow at the time, Rick managed to create a buzz and a fan base overseas, “and I didn’t even leave the house,” he laughs.
So how did the guy find fame on the other side of the world?
Easy.
Rick wrote one tear-jerking tune and then sneaked into the hearts of millions at prime time by landing a significant song spot on Grey’s Anatomy.
“I never imagined people would connect with ‘Swans’ the way they did,” he says. “If you look on YouTube, there are videos from all over the world of people singing and even ballet dancing to it. And to think it wasn’t even going to be on my debut album.”
The success of Sugar and Spite, Unkle Bob’s first full length album, fueled 2010’s followup Shockwaves, and that record made way for Rick’s latest EP, Songs for Others.
Releasing the project through PledgeMusic, Rick explored new territory, not only by connecting so personally with fans who funded the album, but also by taking on more electric instruments and drawing inspiration from Nick Cave, Grizzly Bear and The Smiths.
“Everybody has a good Morrissey inside them,” he laughs.
Rick made a playlist of songs by a few more of his favorite artists.
