MAGIC!’s playlist
MAGIC! is the most promising band to emerge on the Canadian music scene this year.
Nominated for a 2014 MuchMusic Video Award just 7 months after the release of their debut single “Rude,” the group is already being tagged with top homegrown acts like Drake and Justin Bieber.
MAGIC! is going to be hard to beat, especially since frontman Nasri Atweh is already a superstar in his own right.
The man is a Grammy-winning songwriter and has worked with some of the biggest stars on the planet including Christina Aguilera, Chris Brown, Cody Simpson, David Guetta, the New Kids on the Block and fellow Canadian Justin Bieber.
Nasri has been involved with just too many hits to name, but when he is pressured into picking a No.1, he caves and admits to having a favorite.
“I’ve done a lot with Justin Bieber and I’m really proud of ‘As Long As You Love Me,’” Nasri answers.
And something else about Nasri, when he gets to talking, he is like an open book. So, for all you Beliebers out there, here is some inside trivia that you may not know about the Biebs’ gold Holiday single “Mistletoe,” another tune that Nasri favors.
“I also wrote that Christmas song for Justin and I actually did it in my boxer briefs at my piano,” he laughs.
That same piano played a part in writing bits of MAGIC!’s forthcoming album and its MMVA-nominated lead single “Rude,” that climbed to No.6 on the Canadian Hot 100 and found its way around the world and to the top of the charts in Australia and New Zealand.
Just another reason why these newcomers are soon-to-be front-runners.
Now meet the guys that make MAGIC!. Nasri has set you up with introductions through a playlist of their fave artists.
.
D’Angelo
“Our guitar player Mark Pelli is a R&B/soul cat. He always puts on D’Angelo and he also loves Brian McKnight.”
.
The Beatles
“Ben Spivak on bass is a Beatles freak. He’s a very old school song guy. Anything from The Beatles to the Bee Gees, that’s his style.”
.
James Blake
“Alex Tanas, our drummer, is in love with James Blake and he’s such a weirdo, he loves ratchet music. When he’s in the car, he puts on the most ghetto hip hop tracks, and we’re all like, ‘Huh?’”
.
Stevie Wonder
“Myself, growing up I listened to a lot of radio and dove into Stevie Wonder. He’s my go to. Songs in the Key of Life is still my favorite album.”
