Music video superstars Walk Off the Earth had it coming to them.

The band that shot to global stardom by way of their viral visuals are in the running for a 2015 MuchMusic Video Award.

In this year’s big race, Walk Off the Earth is competing with Grimes, SonReal, Young Wolf Hatchlings, and Zeds Dead.

“We’re trying to keep our feet on the ground and not let our egos get the better of us,” says frontgal Sarah Blackwood on their sudden success.

But so what if the honor went straight to their heads. Who would blame them? Here’s a group that rose to stardom without the aid of a record label or management team. And now they’re being recognized among Canada’s best.

Forget about winning, just being nominated is enough to inflate an ego.

Still, Sarah swears that Walk Off the Earth’s massive success and recognition changes nothing, and that she and her bandmates are now and always will remain grateful, grounded and humble.

“Staying this way is important in the music industry and it’s really important to us,” Sarah says. “You can’t take anything for granted. People might care about you now, but then not give a sh!t tomorrow. No matter how big or small your career is, it all can change within days.”

And this is a band that knows all about change.

Just three years ago Walk Off the Earth posted a homemade video cover of Gotye’s hit single “Somebody That I Used to Know” on YouTube. In under two weeks the video went viral with over 35 million views and earned them a spotlight on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Their lives haven’t been the same since.

Today, their innovative rendition has been viewed over 165 million times and that global exposure has taken their career to new uncharted heights, placing them at the forefront of the Canadian music scene.

“There’s no way we could have seen this coming, but we did realize that online videos are a crucial part of the way the music industry is going,” Sarah says. “Online videos have become huge for us. That’s just what we do, we shoot videos, it’s a part of our creative process, it’s part of our music.”

Every video that Walk Off the Earth has produced since has gone viral and their rise continues. Their major label debut album R.E.V.O. is certified gold in Canada and earned them three JUNO nominations, and their latest single “Rule the World” is climbing the charts while its video is up for some hardware at the 2015 MuchMusic Video Awards

“It’s all so dreamy, but our eyes are wide open,” Sarah says. “We’re ready to go with it. Go with whatever is being thrown our way and try to be creative and make the best music we can.”
