Kiernan Shipka’s playlist

KiernanShipkaMad Men bowed out after 7 seasons in May, and now that final chapter is receiving applause at the 67th annual Emmy Awards.

AMC’s monumental hit series is up for 11 awards including the grand honor of Outstanding Drama Series, coming in as Mad Men’s 116th Emmy nomination since its debut in 2007.

Nostalgic and humbled is 15-year-old Kiernan Shipka who starred as Sally Draper from the time she was 8.

“It’s such a blessing to be able to play a character for such a long period of time,” Kiernan says as she moves on from what was a huge part of her life.

“I’ve really grown up on the show. It’s been an amazing learning experience because everybody there is so talented and so amazing to watch. I learn a lot by watching other people do their job, and these amazing people are excellent at their jobs. I’m taking so much away from that.”

Kiernan is actually out there right now applying some of those tricks of the trade she picked up from her time with the series. Her first post-Mad Men role is the lead in the supernatural drama One and Two starring fellow teen-star Timothee Chalamet, who you may known from Homeland and Interstellar.

The film premiered earlier this summer at the Texas big-time festival SXSW, while Kiernan was filming scenes for another movie, the now completed thriller February, opposite Emma Roberts and Lauren Holly.

Kiernan is eager to show the world something new, but she’s going to have a hard time putting Mad Men behind her straightaway. The actor knows fans are going to keep thinking of her as Sally, at least until another breakthrough part comes along.

“People come up to me and address me as Sally and talk about [her] parents and how awful they are,” but that’s all good she says. “I love it actually. I think Sally’s such a genuine character. She’s strong and independent, and people love her. I love her. She’s a rock star.”

And apropos to actual rock stars, “It’s very hard to choose,” Kiernan says when she’s drilled for her current favorites. But you can’t go wrong with a playlist stacked with tunes by these three she adores.

St. Vincent

“I listen to ‘Cruel’ by St.Vince a lot .”

Youth Lagoon

“‘17’ is really good. I like listening to it while I travel for some reason.

Haim

“Haim is so good. I play their album on repeat.”
