“Cheerleader” singer Omi heated up the MMVAs with his sizzling song of the summer
“Cheerleader” singer Omi made his North American television debut at the 2015 MuchMusic Video Awards on Sunday night.
The Jamaican popstar turned up the heat and opened the MMVAs with a red carpet performance of this summer’s official anthem “Cheerleader.”
The tune is a global hit charting at No.1 on iTunes in 78 countries including Canada, the U.S. and the UK.
“I’m honored to be in this position very young in my career,” Omi says backstage in the MMVA press room. “I’m very grateful. We’re off to a pretty good start.”
A good start on international ground that is, as the 28 year-old star isn’t exactly a new artist.
Omi, born Omar Samuel Pasley, penned his first song at age 14 and explains that “Cheerleader” has actually been kicking around the Caribbean for some time now.
“This song was originally released in 2012, but we always knew it had the potential to do better,” Omi says.
And better it did after German producer and DJ Felix Jaehn put his spin on the track. Omi’s label mate laid down some tropical-house beats, a few instrument add-ons and sped up the tempo.
“Felix did a wonderful job,” Omi comments on the outcome and version the world knows today. “I really respect what he did. He kept true to the essence of the song.”
If you look for the original recording on iTunes, you’ll find a reggae ditty that’s fluffy, cheerful and simple.
“This song is one of the most organic compositions I’ve ever done,” Omi adds. “It’s one of those feel good songs. It really lifts your spirits.”
As “Cheerleader” continues to grow into the biggest new song in the world, Omi plans to ride its wave, starting with a North American tour. He will also chase the single’s success with a full album release in the fall.
“It’s all up from here,” he says.
