Debbie Rochon’s playlist
Debbie Rochon, the scream queen of the B-movie scene, is bound for Toronto’s Horror-Rama.
The all-horror two-day fan convention (presented in part by Fangoria, the wide-spread American horror mag) is celebrating the bloody genre with film screenings, meet and greets, panels and even a concert. All with no shortage of star power.
The iconic Michael Berryman, most famous for his role in Wes Craven’s 1977 classic The Hills Have Eyes, headlines the fright fest.
Among the celebrity guests is esteemed filmmaker and writer Mick Garris known for creating Showtime’s Masters of Horror and renowned for his adaptations of the works of Stephen King including Bag of Bones, The Stand, Sleepwalkers and the TV miniseries remake of The Shining.
Actor Linnea Quigley will be in attendance as she marks the 30th anniversary of her film Return of the Living Dead.
Austrian cult movie legend Sybil Danning also joins the lineup, celebrating 30 years of her flick, 1985’s Howling II: Your Sister is a Werewolf.
The horror hoopla doesn’t end there.
Rock and roll monster Cherie Currie, who rose to fame fronting the all-female band The Runaways with the legendary Joan Jett signed up for a panel and is set to take the stage in an intimate setting. You cinephiles should recognize Cherie from 80s cult favorites like Parasite featuring Demi Moore in her first major picture role and Twilight Zone: The Movie.
And then there’s Debbie Rochon. Having starred in over 200 film productions, including the recent slasher Dollface, which had its video release last month, the Vancouver-born starlet has her rightful place among these horror movie top dogs.
As she packs her bags for a weekend in Toronto, Debbie made this playlist of tunes she never leaves home without.
The Slider – T-Rex
“The words help me deal with my emotions, besides the amazing musical chops in the song, lyrics like ‘And when I’m sad, I slide’ means to me ‘let it slide’ or ‘I slide into the dark abyss.’”
Blank Expression – The Specials
“I love the upbeat tempo of this song and such good drums beats. The words are clever, have social meaning and make me laugh. Powerful. Most of us do walk through life numb.”
Rock and Roll Suicide – David Bowie
“This song is highly emotional, speaks to my soul and is one of David Bowie’s finest moments as a musician. He really feels what he says.”
Bag It Up – Oasis
“Says so much. I love the line about being on the edge of a runway, it says to me I won’t be long here (if in a stressful place away from home). Love the lyrics about ‘All the freaks are rising up through the floor’ as it is so true in this life.”
Hateful – The Clash
“Jumpy, body movin’ tune, yet lyrics are about all sorts of addictions that make you say things like, ‘This year I’ve lost some friends, Some friends? What friends? I dunno, I ain’t even noticed. It’s hateful and it’s paid for and I’m so grateful for being nowhere.’”
Horror-Rama runs Saturday, October 17 and Sunday, October 18 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Toronto. Get more info, a complete list of the attendees and tickets here.
