What Jason Momoa shares with Aquaman

jasonmomoaJustice League just wrapped filming in London and Jason Momoa, who plays Aquaman in the Zack Snyder production alongside Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill, marked the occasion with an Instagram post that has now gone viral.

The former Game of Thrones star thanked the Justice League cast and crew in the caption of a shirtless pic showing off his metahuman physique and his prominent shark teeth tattoo that wraps his forearm (get a load of the image below).

Fun fact: Jason’s tattoo happens to be identical to the markings on Aquaman’s armored wrist bracer that he is sporting in the film.

While both patterns share design, Jason tells me they do not share meaning.

“My tattoo is actually my family crest,” says the Honolulu-born actor. “It’s the aumakua that represents our family.”

In Hawaiian mythology, the aumakua are ancestral spirits turned gods who serve to protect their descendants. Think guardian angels except in form of various animals including owls, hawks, crows and turtles.

“Ours is a mano, a shark, so my tattoo is little shark teeth,” Jason says. “My family has it tattooed on our left side. Like arrows, it faces out to take the darkness out of your heart and bring the light in.”

And now back to movie-related news. Following Justice League, slated to hit theaters on November 17 next year, the King of Atlantis will get his standalone movie Aquaman expected out in 2018 with Amber Heard to co-star along with Patrick Wilson, Willem Dafoe and Nicole Kidman.

Justice League is scheduled to hit theaters on Friday, November 17 and Aquaman is expected to be released in December 21, 2018.
