Alessia Cara’s playlist
Canada’s It Girl Alessia Cara is among the acts set to take stage at the 2018 iHeartRadio MMVAs.
Alessia makes her return to the iconic street party after co-hosting last year’s award show with Joe Jonas, where she was also nominated for three awards including Most Buzzworthy Canadian.
Only time will tell, but judging from the year Alessia is having, there’s a chance the star will walk away from Canada’s biggest night in music with a trophy or two… hey, maybe even three. Alessia is up for the MMVAs for Best Pop Artist, Fan Fave Artist and Fan Fave Video.
Earlier this year, the Brampton, Ontario singer, who got her start uploading cover songs to YouTube, took home the 2018 Grammy Award for Best New Artist, and in March, “Stay,” her highly applauded collaboration with German DJ Zedd, won the iHeartRadio Music Award for Dance Song of the Year.
As praise for Alessia continues, the songwriter is working on a follow-up album to her debut Know-It-All, expected to be released sometime this year via Def Jam Recordings.
“The process of this next upcoming project has been very different from the first,” Alessia comments on her forthcoming album. “I’ve been touring and I haven’t had a lot of time to be in a studio.”
But Alessia says she is putting in the work any time and anywhere she can.
“On a bus, on a plane, even in my room in the middle of the night. I’ll wake up and sing something into my phone, flesh it out on my guitar and see what happens.”
Also differing from Know-It-All is the personnel department.
For Know-It-All, Alessia teamed up with an array of creative forces including Pop & Oak, a songwriting and production duo famous for working with Ariana Grande, Britney Spears, Demi Lovato, Jason Derulo, Jessie J, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna and Usher.
Alessia also paired with Malay, a producer and songwriter known for his work with Alicia Keys, Frank Ocean, John Legend, John Mayer and Zayn.
For the yet to be released album, Alessia is flying a little more solo.
“A lot of the writing this time around has been all me, which is definitely a challenge, but really fun,” she says.
While we’re on the subject of collaborations, Alessia made this playlist inspired by her wish list of artists she hopes to partner with in the future.
Be Right There – Diplo & Sleepy Tom
Signs – Drake
Galway Girl – Ed Sheeran
Novacane – Frank Ocean
Bangarang – Skrillex (featuring Sirah)
Don’t Leave – Snakehips & MØ
Alessia is nominated for three 2018 iHeartRadio MMVAs and will take the stage alongside fellow Canadian superstar Shawn Mendes at the big event airing live Sunday, August 26 at 9 p.m. EST. on CTV, MTV and Much.
