A little chat with 13 Reasons Why star Brandon Flynn

Brandon Flynn made his acting debut as Justin Foley in Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why.

The second season of Netflix’s controversial series 13 Reasons Why is coming.

The teen drama, which centers around the suicide of high school student Hannah Baker and the classmates who receive recordings made by Hannah detailing the 13 reasons why she ended her life, will return in the new year with a 13-episode run.

The renewal is no real surprise. 13 Reasons Why is a smash hit and is highly praised all around from cast performance and direction to writing and visuals.

But while the series is applauded, it falls under fire too.

Numerous mental health organizations and educational institutions are criticizing 13 Reasons Why for its graphic portrayal of teen suicide while claiming the show glorifies self-harm and has a problematic take on other issues like rape and youth depression.

Newcomer-actor Brandon Flynn, who plays Justin Foley in the series based on Jay Asher’s New York Times best-selling book of the same name, shrugs off the negative backlash. For him, being on board such a groundbreaking show is an honor.

“And as my first job in the industry, it’s beyond belief to me,” Brandon says.

While trying to wrap his mind around the huge success of the show, Brandon comes to think the relatable characters play a big part.

“Those characters are so realistic and most of our fans seem to really relate with the characters on the show. We’ve all sort of gone through those issues that we talk about on the show.”

Now as far as season two goes, not much is being revealed, aside from news that the next chapter will deal with the aftermath of Hannah Baker’s suicide and the assault of Jessica Davis, and that actor Anne Winters, recently seen in TV’s Tyrant and Wicked City, has joined the cast.

And don’t count on any show-and-tell from Brandon. The actor’s lips are sealed about what’s to come.

“You’ll be able to binge-watch it. That’s all I can say.”

13 Reasons Why season one is streaming on Netflix now. Season two is scheduled to premiere in early 2018.
