Pierre Lapointe surprised fans with new album
French Canadian pop star Pierre Lapointe caught fans by surprise last Friday (August 24) with the release of a new album.
Ton corps est déjà froid was kept secret until it was revealed along with a video for the lead single of the same name.
A string of 5 shows, and only 5, were also announced in support of the album.
Two of these special sets took place this past Thursday and Friday at Rouyn-Noranda’s Festival de Musique Émergente (FME).
The remaining three shows will be held Montreal at L’Escogriffe on September 5, 6 and 7.
This side project, which Pierre has dubbed “Pierre Lapointe et les Beaux Sans-Coeur,” started two years ago when Pierre and longtime collaborator Philippe Brault decided to jam and create some new and very different material just for the fun of it.
“Like teenagers in a garage band,” Pierre said when I caught up with the guys at FME.
“We just wanted to have fun and do something energetic without thinking too much. It was very fast and spontaneous,” Philippe added.
The two co-wrote the entire album within a couple days and it was recorded and mixed in no more than four days.
“We spent more time on the visual than on the music,” Pierre said referring to the album art created by Derek Rippe (aka The Cute Brute) art director and illustrator famous for his work with Nickelodeon (see below).
The finished product is 12 raw songs reminiscent of 60s and 70s rock that are uncalculated and rooted in pure and simple fun.
“One of the reasons that I accepted to release the album was that I’m going to have fun with my friends,” Pierre said.
Pierre and his band les Beaux Sans-Cœur will perform at Montreal’s L’Escogriffe on Wednesday, September 5, Thursday, September 6 and Friday, September 7.
