Hawksley Workman’s playlist
Happy anniversary Hawksley!
Ten years ago the eccentric singer-songwriter released Almost a Full Moon, a collection of nontraditional and curious Christmas songs.
“It was a record of wondering what the hell was going on in the world. I also wanted to make sure my grandmother knew how important she was to me,” Hawksley says.
To commemorate the album’s 10th anniversary, Hawksley recorded Full Moon Eleven. The original songs are revisited and sung by the man Hawksley’s become a decade later.
“My records are very acute and detailed representations of the times I’m living in,” he explains.
That said, you can expect to unwrap darker, softer versions this time around.
The double-disc album includes the original 2001 recordings, the new versions of those eight songs and the addition of two newbies, “Coldest Night of the Year” and “This Will Be the Year.”
Before populating his playlist with the Holiday habituals, here are five tunes Hawksley is playing now.
Crazy Face – Van Morrison
“When I was a kid my dad used to ‘air sax’ the solo. A shockingly lovely recording.”
.
Tight Connection to My Heart – Bob Dylan
“My favourite Dylan tune.”
.
No Reply At All – Genesis
“Not a sexy tune, but an amazing bit of music and an interesting reminder that, not that long ago, music played by good musicians used to be on the radio.”
.
Mixed Emotions – The Rolling Stones
“Sounds like they stumbled, last minute, into a studio. The recording is an incredibly energetic, magical, sloppy picture of a rock band.”
.
Year of the Cat – Al Stewart
“Not exactly sure what all the lyrics are, I like the sound of his voice. I’ve been returning to real music recorded on tape lately. The acoustic guitar solo is mixed too high. Love it.”
Hawksley’s Full Moon Eleven is available now.
