Matthew Barber’s playlist

A troop of Canadian recording artists will face off against NHL greats tonight at the 2012 Juno Cup.

Matthew Barber is banding together with fellow musicians including Sam Roberts, Classified and Blue Rodeo’s Jim Cuddy in a celebrity charity hockey match opposite retired NHL stars like Gary Roberts, Claude Lemieux and four-time Stanley Cup winner Paul Coffey.

The Juno Cup has been raising funds for MusiCounts, Canada’s music education charity, since its launch in 2004.

This is Matthew’s second Juno Cup and he’s geared up and pumped to resume his position as goalie.

“Gary Roberts better stay out of my crease!” That’s all Matthew has to say.

All the excitement surrounding the annual game has made the Juno Cup a fan-favorite among the Juno week festivities and it hasn’t disappointed yet.

Here’s a playlist featuring some of Matthew’s favorites.

 .

All I Want – Joni Mitchell

“It’s so positive and uplifting despite bittersweet lyrics. Joni is such a great singer.”

.

Coax Me  – Sloan

“I think they nailed a perfect recording with this one and it was the biggest hit of my Canadian indie-rock love affair in my late teens and early twenties.”

.

Rocking Chair  – The Band

“The most distinct (and non-hit) song from possibly the best album of all time (there may be a multi-way tie with a few others).”

.

You Really Got A Hold On Me – The Beatles

“A rare example of where I prefer a cover to the original (by Smokey Robinson, also amazing). This track shows how good the Beatles got at delivering their take on R&B covers at the time they were having their first original hits.”

.

Everybody Knows This is Nowhere – Neil Young

“I think this is possibly Neil’s best two and a half minutes on tape. A great performance that is bursting with both joy and despair.”

The Juno Cup starts at 7:30 p.m. (Friday, March 30) at Ottawa’s Steve Yzerman Arena (Nepean Sportsplex). Join Matthew on facebook and twitter.
