City and Colour’s playlist

DallasGreenPraise for City and Colour’s latest album If I Should Go Before You roars on as the Canadian star tours North America in support of the release.

After earning three Juno nominations including Artist of the Year and Songwriter of the Year this past spring, City and Colour (aka Dallas Green) is up for a 2016 iHeartRadio MuchMusic Video Award for Best Rock/Alternative Video for the album’s second single “Wasted Love.”

If Dallas takes the trophy, it won’t be his first. He won the 2006 MMVA for Fan Fave Artist (labelled the Peoples Choice: Favorite Canadian Artist at the time) for his tune “Save Your Scissors,” and among all the recognition he’s received since, that honor happens to be his fave.

“That award means a lot to me,” Dallas tells me. “Unlike a lot of awards where you have a panel of people voting and deciding who wins, people who actually dig my songs were voting for me.”

Speaking of votes of confidence, Dallas says it’s the fans’ positive response to his music that jump started and fueled his solo career.

In 2005, while co-fronting the band Alexisonfire, Dallas released a few songs online using the handle City and Colour.

“I had a whole bunch of songs that I didn’t really know what to do with,” he says, explaining the reason for the digital releases.

When fans ate up those tracks, Dallas reworked those tunes in the studio and recorded a collection of songs which became his debut solo album Sometimes.

“I figured why not put a record out and see what happens next,” Dallas says. “That was the first goal, just to see if anyone would dig what I was doing on the side.”

Oh, we dig it alright.

Sometimes earned Dallas the Juno Award for Alternative Album of the Year and set the stage for four more loudly applauded solo studio albums and rose ave., a collaborative record with pop superstar P!nk, which the two released under the joint moniker You+Me.

As Dallas and I looked back at his start, we thought we’d put a soundtrack to this nostalgic moment.

I asked Dallas to pick a time when he felt his solo career found its steady footing and for a playlist of albums he remembers having on repeat at that stage in his life.

The year was 2009. Dallas had just won the Juno Award for Songwriter of the Year for his platinum-selling sophomore album Bring Me Your Love, and the album’s second single, “Sleeping Sickness,” (featuring the Tragically Hip’s frontman Gordon Downie) achieved gold certification.

Here’s a playlist of albums Dallas had going in his ears.
