Emm Gryner’s playlist
Emm Gryner is one of the most independent women in Canadian music. This Sarnia, Ontatio native released her first two albums by her lonesome, before being picked up by Mercury Records in 1998.
When the drama of record label mergers became too much to handle, Emm grabbed the wheel and took her career into her own hands. She returned to her indie beginnings and founded her own label, Dead Daisy Records.
“Major labels ignore great music, and I’m too impatient to wait for other people to do things for me, so I started the label,” Emm says, headstrong.
Since then, Emm has self-produced nine more albums, one EP, earned herself two Juno nominations and toured with an impressive cast of characters that includes Sarah Mclachlan, Alanis Morissette, The Cardigans, Jann Arden, and the legendary David Bowie.
“Insane and wonderful. Inspiring and challenging,” she says, remembering her tour days with Bowie. “It was great fun running all over Europe and getting to hang with famous people. I am grateful for the time with him. His music will always mean something a little different to me.”
Here are five songs that also mean a little something to Emm.
Cobrastyle – Robyn
Time To Pretend – MGMT
Let Me Know – Roisin Murphy
(You’re) Having My Baby – Paul Anka
No Cars Go – Vitaminsforyou
