Joel Plaskett’s playlist

JoelPlaskettIf Joel Plaskett has his way, history will repeat itself at the 2016 Juno Awards.

The Maritimes music icon is reaching for Adult Alternative Album of the Year after he got his hands on the same prize 6 years ago following the release of his album Three.

This time around, Joel’s 7th nomination at the Canadian music award show is for his latest effort, The Park Avenue Sobriety Test.

The praised album is an ambitious, introspective and diverse collection that reflects the various sonic styles Joel has taken on throughout his music career spanning over two decades. The songwriter goes from delicate acoustic numbers to thicker radio-ready rock tunes and then to places in between.

With one listen you’ll realize it’s no coincidence that the title’s acronym is PAST.

The Park Avenue Sobriety Test also sees Joel bring back Ian McGettigan from his prior project Thrush Hermit as well as his longtime backing band The Emergency.

Among the multiple guests featured on the record are Tim Brennan, JP Cormier, Peter Elkas and Joel’s 2016 Adult Alternative Album of the Year rival Mo Kenney.

All just a few of the many reasons why this album is an outstanding highlight in the man’s career and worthy of the shiny trophy.

While the East Coast star has his eyes on the prize, I had him make this playlist of his sparkling favorites.

Anyway the Wind Blows – JJ Cale

“If I had to listen to one song on repeat for a lifetime, this would be it. This groove is train on tracks that go around the world.”

Stairway to Heaven – Led Zeppelin

“Still the most epic rock song of all time. The performance and recording is from another planet. There is no room for debate.”

Love on my Brain – Jim Ford

“He’s like George Jones fronting the Four Tops. Sign me up.”

Celebrated Summer – Husker Du

“I’m 16 years old and this is everything.”

The Twelfth of Never (1963 version) – Nina Simone

“True perfection. And the guitar player only plays the last note of the song.”

Joel’s album The Park Avenue Sobriety Test is up for Adult Alternative Album of the Year at the 2016 Juno Awards. See it all go down live Sunday, April 3 on CTV.
