Said The Whale’s playlist

Juno Award-winning indie band Said The Whale just announced their first new release since 2009’s Islands Disappear.

Grammy Award winner Jack Joseph Puig, who’s worked with first-rate acts like U2, Weezer and No Doubt, is mixing the group’s untitled third full length album right now.

Said The Whale’s forthcoming effort is slated for release in the early spring of 2012. That’s 5 months away, so in the meantime the band is offering New Brighton, a 4-track digital EP that they recorded over the summer, to tide fans over.

The first track, “Lines,” will be available exclusively through Said The Whale’s official site as early as October 18 and the entire EP will be released on November 8.

If you happen to be in the U.S., Said The Whale has a few more dates for you to remember. The band is currently preparing for a tour with fellow Canadians We Are The City.

This will be the Vancouver band’s second U.S. tour. Their first American adventure, made earlier this year, was immortalized in the CBC documentary Winning America.

The film follows Said The Whale across the border to the South by Southwest Festival (SXSW) in Texas and documents the highs and lows of a touring band trying to make it big at the legendary music festival.

Winning America will air nationally on CBC the afternoon of New Year’s Eve, so save the date and check your local listings folks.

Upon the band’s return from SXSW, and on the eve of their Juno win this past March, Said The Whale co-founder Ben Worcester met me backstage at Toronto’s Horseshoe Tavern, and had this to say to all the Whale fans in the sea.

“Hi! This is Ben from Said The Whale and I’m going to tell you all what I have on my playlist. I listen to a lot of reggae because it’s like sunshine in music form and it makes me feel great. This isn’t all reggae, but it is all good music for the soul. Enjoy!”
