Brandon Flynn: “13 Reasons Why is an important show.”
Great news for fans of 13 Reasons Why. Netflix’s highly controversial series has been renewed for a third season.
Brandon Flynn who stars as Justin Foley is among the many thrilled about the announcement.
“It’s an amazing and really special show,” Brandon says. “I’m honored to be a part of a show that deals with issues that are important to our generation, to every generation. These are social issues that affect us all in some way. We hope the show helps people start conversations about these issues. It’s an honor to be doing that kind of work. 13 Reasons Why is an important show.”
Not everyone is happy about the news of the show’s renewal and Brandon’s feelings about the series aren’t shared by all.
Since the teen drama premiered in the spring of 2017, the series has been under fire and received backlash for its graphic depictions and dealings with teen issues that include suicide, bullying, drug use, rape and other forms of violence and abuse.
People have been voicing their concerns like the Parents Television Council. This non-partisan education organization which advocates for responsible entertainment launched an online petition to have the show stopped in its tracks.
“There will always be people who don’t agree with the show,” Brandon says in defense of the series. “People are going to like it and people aren’t going to like it. I’m OK with that. That, to me, is just good art.”
The renewal of 13 Reasons Why was announced via the show’s official Twitter account. The news came through a short video centered on a student opening their school locker with the combination 20-1-9, a nod to the year the new season will premiere.
An exact air date has yet to be released but judging from the premiere dates of the two previous seasons, it’s safe to assume that the series will return in late spring/early summer of next year.
