Adam Lambert steps up as Queen frontman
The minute Adam Lambert joined Queen on stage at the 2011 MTV European Music Awards, rumors started flying that he would be filling the massive shoes of legendary frontman Freddie Mercury.
Well, it’s happening, at least for the duration of a teensy European tour that kicked off last weekend in Kiev, Ukraine.
“It’s pretty crazy,” Adam grinned as we chatted in his room at the W Hotel in Montreal before he took off to Europe.
“It’s a nice challenge to be on stage with legends. I’m there as their guest and I intend to go in with the utmost respect.”
Adam arrived in Europe riding on the success of his sophomore album Trespassing, which debuted at #1 on the US Billboard charts upon its release in May.
Adam hasn’t even toured the album yet, but didn’t think twice about setting one dream aside for another.
“I’ve been so obsessed with Trespassing for the past year and a half, [the tour] will get my mind away from it for a second which will be a nice break.”
The former American Idol contestant has 6 show dates scheduled with his lifetime idols this month.
The kick off event in Kiev was a joint benefit concert with Elton John for the Elena Pinchuk ANTIAIDS Foundation, and the three last dates bring the rockers to London, where it all began with Freddie Mercury in 1971.
“I love Freddie Mercury,” Adam said of the irreplaceable frontman and he hopes the public gets the gist of this special tour.
“The idea is just to sing great music. To sing these songs the way he intended them to be sung, not in a mimicking fashion, not to imitate,” Adam smiled. “The idea is to pay homage to his memory.”
Adam fronts Queen tonight at Moscow’s Olympic Arena. More tour dates here. You can find Adam on twitter and facebook. Trespassing is available on iTunes now.

Love! LOVE! LAWWWWVE!
Marc Andrew, who the heck are you?! This is amazing!
Queen have made history recognizing the star power Adam Lambert has. They are smart guys, not only have they made Queen come alive for a whole new generation, but they have helped millions of people become aware of an incredible charismatic talent, who is at the beginning of his career. Adam changes lives with his message of acceptance and love and brings so much joy into people’s lives. This is indeed a spectacularly wonderful collaboration. Bravo Queen, Bravo Adam!
I was uncertain about Adam Lambert fronting Queen until I watched the Kiev concert on Utube. There is no doubt he is the only one in the world able to bring Queen music to life the way it should be. A magnificent concert. I hope he is as successful in his own right, since his new album Trespassing is brilliant. I’m hoping Queen plans a few concerts in the USA.
As an almost life long Queen fan I never thought I’d want anyone else to front my favorite band until I saw Adam Lambert sing Bohemian Rhapsody a capella during AI auditions and blew me away. I got goosebumps as soon as he finished singing it. I knew that minute that he would be iconic and had a secret wish that someday he would front Queen. I thought if anyone would fit perfectly w Queen it would be Adam. Since American Idol I’ve seen Adam mature both personally and professionally into a superstar. This Queen mini-tour is a dream come true and I can’t wait to see them live in London next week. I am a US citizen and will travel thousands of miles for this epic event.
So happy to see this beautiful music created by all the members of Queen come to life again with the assistance of the incredible voice of Adam Lambert. No imitator he – a performer great in his own right. Rock on boys!
And what a great job he has done so far in Kiev and Moscow. He is a talented, intelligent, respectful guy (everyone says that about him who has met him). His stage personna is incredible and his voice is meant to sing the music of Queen. Freddie is irreplaceable but I would bet he would be happy to see that this music is once again being shared with the world. That is what music is for–
