Rihanna launches Fenty clothing line

Fenty, Rihanna’s luxury clothing line with LVMH (Moët Hennessy-Louis Vuitton), has barely seen the light of day and it’s already making history.

The 31-year-old singer is now the first person since 1987 to launch a new house with LVMH, the world’s leading luxury group.

But that’s not all.

It is also reported that Rihanna is the first woman to create an original line at LVMH and the first female of color to sit at the top of a major luxury fashion house.

Rihanna’s eponymous collection (Fenty is her surname) that Vogue magazine is calling “the most highly anticipated fashion drop in recent memory” follows the superstar’s lingerie brand Savage X Fenty and her super-successful cosmetics collection Fenty Beauty.

And that’s another one for the record books.

Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty revolutionized the industry when it launched in 2017.

Rihanna and CO. offered a whopping 40 shades of foundation and has since added on extra tones, bringing the total up to 50 shades now. The collection was so successful that it sent competing cosmetic companies scrambling to launch more shades to try to keep up.

Rihanna’s team-up with LVMH also chases her collaborations with fashion powerhouses including Armani, Dior, Stance and Manolo Blahnik, as well as Puma and the British high street fashion brand River Island.

“I love so many designers, big and small,” Rihanna answers when I ask who her No.1 designer is. “Dior and Jean Paul Gaultier are some of my favorites. They blow my mind.”

What’s really mind blowing is Rihanna, who has sold over 250 million albums since her debut in 2005, has achieved icon status in the music world and is now doing the same in the fashion industry.

But then again, her fashion business ventures don’t come as much of a surprise. Rihanna and fashion have been one and the same since the start, and the singer says her dive into fashion was a very natural jump.

“I love making music and I feel like music is really connected to fashion, accessories and makeup,” she says. “When I make music, I already see the video in my head. I see images and I feel an energy, but I think everyone does. I mean that’s why music videos exist. Music, imagery, art and fashion, it’s all connected.”

When it comes to fashion, Rihanna loves edgy and original designs that don’t exactly fit into molds and trends.

“I also really enjoy fashion inspired by menswear. I love the combination of feminine and masculine. I’m not usually into very girly looks.”

Fenty released a campaign video to show the world a first look at what’s in store. Watch it below and you’ll get a feel for what Rihanna is talking about.

If you like what you see and want to get your hands on some pieces, Fenty will operate from a digital flagship store, Fenty.com, with a few physical pop-up locations set to open around the world. The first up is in Paris.

Judging from Rihanna’s other projects, Fenty is bound to be a wild success.

Riri knows what she is doing. She also seems to know all the ins and outs of the biz.

The star wasn’t given a Fashion Icon Award by the Council of Fashion Designers of America for nothing.

Now, while I’ve got Rihanna here for you, how about a fashion tip from a pro?

“You have to be comfortable,” Rihanna says. “Know who you are and just be that. It’s all about having fun and not trying too hard. Just be you.”

Rihanna’s brand Fenty will be available Friday, May 24 at Fenty.com
