Shawn Mendes is out to own the 2017 Juno Awards
The 18-year-old leads this year’s hopefuls with an impressive total of 5 nominations including the top honors Artist of the Year, Album of the Year and the JUNO Fan Choice Award.
Shawn also earned a place among the celebrated acts set to perform at the Canadian music award show like fellow Artist of the Year nominee Alessia Cara.
This is all quite something for an artist who is just two albums into his music career.
A real instant star, Shawn quickly rose to fame in 2013 by way of the digital world when he posted cover songs through the video sharing service Vine.
“It started my career,” Shawn says fully crediting the video app and social media. “It’s what I revolve around. It’s what’s keeping my career going.”
And Shawn’s career is going strong.
Illuminate, the followup to Shawn’s 2015 No.1 debut album Handwritten and the album responsible for his Juno nominations, peaked at No.1 on Billboard’s Canadian Albums chart.
South of the border, Illuminate debuted at No.1 on the US Billboard 200 chart, and the chart-climbing doesn’t end there.
The album’s hit lead single “Treat You Better” made the top 10 on both Billboard’s Hot 100 and Radio Songs charts, making this Shawn’s second top 10 single on the Hot 100 after his song “Stitches” reached No.4 last year.
Illuminate’s success earned Shawn his first American Music Award nomination for New Artist of the Year last November, as well as a People’s Choice Award nomination and three pending iHeart Radio Awards.
Not limited to North America, Shawn’s boom is being felt around the world. Within just two years, he has been nominated for 8 MTV Europe Music Awards and won 4 including Best Male. He also picked up the awards for Best Single and Best International Artist at BBC Radio 1’s Teen Awards.
Whether Shawn’s latest album earns him some trophies at home in Canada remains to be seen, but with these odds, the guy is hopeful and already feels like a winner.
“It’s really a dream come true,” Shawn says of his success. “I haven’t been doing this very long, so for the success to be this much is really amazing.”
Shawn is nominated for Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, Pop Album of the Year, Single of the Year and for the JUNO Fan Choice Award at the 2017 Juno Awards.
He is also set to perform with other top Canadian acts live Sunday, April 2 on CTV and CTV GO. For a complete list of the nominees, performers and everything Junos click here.
