Two Door Cinema Club’s playlist
Two Door Cinema Club shutdown rumors about their breakup with the release of their new album Gameshow.
There is a tiny truth to the chatter though.
The Irish rockers took a very necessary time-out from the artist-life and each other after spending the entirety of their young adult lives attached at the hip in recording studios and on stages around the world.
“We’ve been together since we were 16 and we wrote our first record at 17,” bassist Kevin Baird tells me of his fellow band mates Alex Trimble, Sam Halliday and himself, who are now nearing their 30s.
For some personal space and self-preservation, Kevin relocated to LA, Alex moved to Portland and Sam to London.
Once tensions cooled, each member reached out from their separate corners with fresh ideas and a driving desire to create a new album.
The band reconvened in LA and hooked up with producer Jacknife Lee, who helped with their 2012 gold record Beacon and has also worked with the likes of U2, One Direction, Taylor Swift, R.E.M., The Black Keys, Weezer, Snow Patrol and Elle King.
The result is Gameshow, an album by a re-energized band with a renewed focus and newfound purpose.
“We’re older, more mature, and more knowledgeable,” Kevin says. “You’ll hear it in the music. We’re different people now.”
Kevin made a playlist of acts that helped shape him into the musician his is today.
.
Biffy Clyro
“The first band that really blew my mind was Biffy Clyro. They’re the only band that made me a real crazy fan. When I was 15, I think I would have done anything to meet them and get their autographs. I just love that band.”
.
At the Drive-In
“I had a similar experience with At the Drive-In. They’re another band that was among my first rock music influences.”
.
Daft Punk
“Getting older I started to get into electronic dance music. Daft Punk got me into mainstream EDM. They were an easy band to discover back when I was 15. In Europe, at the time, they were the only group that wasn’t cheesy. Euro-dance isn’t always very cool.”
.
CHVRCHES
“Just incredible. Their song ‘The Mother We Share’ is a great song.”
.
Lindstrom
“Lindstrom is probably one of my favorite artists of all time. While a lot of artists are doing the same thing, he’s very different. I listen to him a lot and he blows my mind.”
