Karl Urban joins star lineup at Fan Expo Canada

Karl in his standout role: Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy in the Star Trek reboot film series.

Star Trek’s Karl Urban is part of the star-studded line up at Toronto’s Fan Expo.

John Travolta, Brendan Fraser and the legendary Mia Farrow are also among the many celebs coming together for the 25th anniversary of the fan convention.

Karl is famous for loads of roles including Éomer in the second and third installments of Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Judge Dredd in the 2012 sci-fi action Dredd, Lord Vaako in the Riddick film series and Skurge the Executioner in Thor: Ragnarok.

But of the numerous parts the New Zealand-born actor has landed since his 1991 debut, Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy in the Star Trek reboot franchise stands to be his most notable.

Karl’s role in Star Trek, Star Trek into Darkness, and Star Trek: Beyond is also his personal favorite.

“I’ll tell you what I love about McCoy,” Karl says.

“I love the fact that he is quite often cantankerous, but underneath it he’s got a heart of gold and there is nothing that he won’t do for his friends, including lay down his own life. I love that polarity, that contradiction. McCoy is a passionate, emotional man. That’s an extraordinary trait to have in a character and I’m phenomenally proud of those films.”

There were rumors that Karl would soon reprise his beloved role as McCoy, but talks of a fourth Star Trek film have died down. It seems the sequel to 2016’s Star Trek: Beyond has been shelved, at least for now.

You can however catch Karl in the Amazon series The Boys based on the acclaimed comic book series of the same name, and fans in the Toronto area can count on seeing the star at Fan Expo.

Fan Expo Canada runs Thursday, August 22 through Sunday, August 25 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Karl is set to appear Saturday and Sunday. Visit FanExpoCanada.com for passes, artist lineup and more info.
