A look into Riverdale through the eyes of star K.J. Apa
The third season of Riverdale, the runaway hit re-imaging of the beloved Archie comics, isn’t even at its halfway point and there’s already been loads of drama, sex, drugs and murder.
The teen mystery is looking grim and lead star K.J. Apa, who plays Archie Andrews, tells me that’s just the way he likes it.
“I’m loving that Riverdale has been going to a darker place and that we see a different side to Archie, a darker side. It’s going to be gnarly.”
If you’ve been watching, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet. There’s a lot of room for the tension and body count to rise as Riverdale showrunners are serving up 22 one-hour episodes this season.
So fans get a heavy dose of Archie and his pals and the cast gets to see a whole lot more of each other while filming on location in Vancouver.
“We’re spending a lot of time together and we’re getting to know each other really well,” says the 21-year-old New Zealand native.
A couple bromances were even kindled on set.
Cole Sprouse, who stars as Jughead Jones, became fast friends with K.J. and the two go on camping trips and spend a lot of off-screen quality time together since they started working on Riverdale in March of 2016.
“Oh yeah, me and Cole are good mates, and me and Luke [Perry] are pretty close. I love Luke and he’s a legend,” K.J. says of the former teen idol and Beverly Hills 90210 star who plays Archie’s dad Fred Andrews.
K.J. found a friend and mentor in Luke and is grateful he can go to the experienced actor for advice about life, the biz and fame.
K.J. says he is thankful for the Riverdale experience altogether and is happy to have found a day job that he loves so much.
“I’m lucky to be working. I’m blessed to be involved in Riverdale and have the opportunity to bring this iconic character to life.”
