Natalia Kills slays it in the studio
Natalia Kills is hard at work on her new album and killing it in studios around the world from LA to Berlin, but fans will have to be very patient. The record isn’t quite finished because the woman is a perfectionist.
“Oh my God, I’m out of control. Someone stop me,” Natalia laughs. “People don’t even say perfectionist, they say control freak. I kill myself over it. I’ve got to stop. It’s horrific.”
The popstar’s controlling tendencies don’t just go for her music. Natalia admits that her habit affects every aspect of her life including her appearance.
“It’s awful. I look at myself sometimes and I’m not sure if my hair is tilted to the right angle. You know, I wear a top knot, like a library bun, but in a more fashionable style on top of my head. Sometimes it takes me 5 minutes, and other days I do it 20 times because I can’t quite get it at the right angle. It’s really bad. Being a perfectionist makes me extreme in every way. It makes me hyper and it makes me vicious.”
Natalia actually recently made international headlines for being just that. Vicious.
If you haven’t heard, she and her singer-hubby Willy Moon were kicked off the judges’ panel of X-Factor New Zealand after a harsh critique of contestant Joe Irvine’s performance.
“As an artist who respects creative integrity and intellectual property, I am disgusted at how much you have copied my husband,” she fired. “Do you not have any value or respect for originality? You’re a laughingstock. It’s cheesy. It’s disgusting. I personally found it absolutely artistically atrocious. I am embarrassed to be sitting here in your presence.”
Willy jumped in and twisted the blade with a comparison to infamous psycho Norman Bates.
Months later, the backlash of this X-Factor fiasco still hangs over Natalia overshadowing news of her forthcoming album and eclipsing all talk of her recent collaboration with Madonna.
It’s really too bad Natalia let a moment that many are now calling career-suicide get the best of her, but after a public apology and admitting “things got out of hand,” can’t we forgive and forget? We all make mistakes. Hers just happened on live television.
So let’s give the girl a second go and let her get back to creating pop songs. It’s what she does best.
After all, Madonna saw something in her.
The queen of pop personally invited Natalia into the studio where the two created demos including the track “Holy Water” for Madonna’s latest release Rebel Heart.
“I really like to work with people who are naturally brilliant,” Natalia says of the experience. “Most geniuses care so much. They’re so proud of their work it’s almost like creative snobbery. They really work hard and fight for what they believe in, and that’s how I feel.”
More of music’s finest including Rihanna, Kid Cudi, LMFAO and Akon see Natalia’s potential and have collaborated with the singer. Black Eyed Peas mastermind will.i.am went as far as signing Natalia to his label back in 2009 and then on to being featured all over “Free,” a single off her debut album appropriately named Perfectionist.
“I learned a lot from will.i.am,” she says of their time together. “The best thing I learned is that your first idea is usually your best idea. Don’t abandon it immediately. Work on it and perfect that one.”
After picking up such lessons and obviously a few new ones along the way (no more bullying, right Natalia?), she is moving forward and focusing on the positive like creating new music with her true love.
“I’m very blessed,” Natalia says. “I’m one of the luckiest girls in the world.”
